ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
Twenty years ago, Colorado voters chose to dedicate the proceeds from state-sponsored lottery games to programs that preserve, protect, enhance, and manage Colorado's great outdoors.
Half the lottery proceeds go to Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) – its sole source of funding -- for grants for land conservation and recreation facility projects prioritized by local governments, land trusts, and the Colorado state park and wildlife agencies. Forty percent goes The Conservation Trust Fund, which supports local open space and recreation projects, and 10 percent is directed to state parks.
The Conservation Campaign is sponsoring the legislative advocacy campaign of the Friends of Colorado's Outdoors coalition to protect current lottery recipients from any attempt to change the current distribution formula.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Over the past 20 years, cities, counties, special districts, land trusts, and Colorado’s state parks and wildlife agencies have invested lottery proceeds to create recreational opportunities, conserve open space and agricultural lands, and preserve wildlife habitat. This investment has defined Colorado’s “brand” – as a great place for businesses to locate, for people to live, and for tourists to enjoy nature and outdoor recreation.
Colorado's dire budget environment has created unprecedented pressure on lawmakers to uncover new funding sources, which has sparked an interest in redirecting lottery funds away from the current recipients.
To protect Colorado's outdoor legacy for the future, it is essential to continue funding for protecting special places, river corridors, and working landscapes, preserving habitat for wildlife, creating and enhancing outdoor recreation, and providing safe places for children to play.
